We are delighted to share an update on our work at Kings College, Guildford, where AHP Architects and Surveyors are leading the design of a state-of-the-art multi-use sports hall building.
Turning a Challenge into an Opportunity
This project was born out of a critical need to replace the school’s existing sports halls, which were constructed using Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) which following a mandate from the government needs to be removed. These have had remedial work carried out to make them safe, but this has only managed to extend their life by 5 years. The design proposes a new stand-alone building which ensures that students can continue their sports curriculum in the old halls while their new home is built right next door.
A Building for the Whole Community
At AHP, we believe the best buildings are designed from the inside out. Following our appointment via the Crescent Purchasing Consortium (CPC) Framework, we held a series of collaborative workshops with:
•             Staff and Students to perfect the educational and coaching spaces.
•             Local Community Groups to ensure the building serves as a vibrant local community asset outside of school hours.
The result is a comprehensive brief that includes a Sport England-compliant main hall, a multi-use space and fitness suite, modern changing facilities, and dedicated classroom space.
Precision in Design
From the initial feasibility studies and spatial adjacency mapping to working alongside a multi-disciplinary team of construction consultants, every detail has been refined to balance aesthetic quality with budgetary discipline.
Looking Ahead
With the scheme submitted for planning in late 2025, we are eager to see this project move toward construction. The Kings College Sports Hall is a fantastic example of how we replace end-of-life structures with sustainable, multi-functional spaces.
